驴子听见蝉唱歌，被美妙动听的歌声所打动，自己也想能发出同样悦耳动听的声音，便羡慕地问他们吃些什么，才能发出如此美妙的声音来。蝉答道：“吃露水。”驴子便也只吃露水，没多久就饿死了。
这个故事告诉人们不要企望非份之物。
lǘzi tīngjiàn chán chànggē ， bèi měimiào dòngtīng de gēshēng suǒ dǎdòng ， zìjǐ yě xiǎng néng fāchū tóngyàng yuèěr dòngtīng de shēngyīn ， biàn xiànmù dìwèn tāmen chīxiē shénme ， cáinéng fāchū rúcǐ měimiào de shēngyīn lái 。 chán dádào ： “ chī lùshuǐ 。 ” lǘzi biàn yě zhǐ chī lùshuǐ ， méiduōjiǔ jiù èsǐ le 。
zhège gùshi gàosu rénmen bùyào qǐwàng fēifèn zhīwù 。
When the donkey heard the cicadas singing, he was moved by the beautiful singing, and wanted to make the same beautiful voice himself, so he enviously asked them what they ate to make such a beautiful voice. The cicada replied, "Eat dew." The donkey also ate only dew, and soon died of starvation.
This story tells people not to expect things that are not part of their share.

Der Esel hörte die Zikaden singen und war bewegt von dem schönen Gesang. Er wollte die gleiche schöne Stimme machen, also fragte er sie neidisch, was sie aßen, um so eine schöne Stimme zu machen. Die Zikade antwortete: „Iss Tau.“ Der Esel aß auch nur Tau und starb bald an Hunger.
